What is a tithe and how is it different from an offering?
The word, "tithe" literally means tenth or 10%. A tithe is the first 10% of your income. An offering is anything you give above and beyond the 10%.
Why do we tithe?
The Bible says, The purpose of tithing is to teach you always to put God first in your lives. (Deuteronomy 14:23 TLB) Tithing is a reminder that God is the supplier of everything we have. It is also God's personal invitation to an outpouring of his blessing in your life.
In Malachi 3:10 (NLT), God says this: "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it." This is the only place in Scripture where God tells us to put him to the test. In other words, he's saying, "Go ahead. I dare you. See if you can out-give me."
Is God wise? Do you trust him?
These are two fundamental questions behind the act of giving. If God is wise, then you should listen to what he says about financial stewardship. If you trust him, then you should trust him with all aspects of your life, including your finances. So go ahead. Accept God's invitation to put him to the test. Start tithing faithfully and watch what he does in and through your life.

Your giving in this first three-year phase of the Decade of Destiny fund will be used to:

BROADEN 4 OUTREACHES
Mentoring
Our goal is to empower our first generation to mentor our second generation.
Church Planting
We have always been strategic in what cities we plant new Saddlebacks. And now, we plan on going national and global! We are looking at Paris, Tokyo, and other strategic cities around the world.
Upgrade and Expand Technology
In order to keep afloat in this ever-evolving technological world, we need to upgrade some of our technology, while also investing in new screens, cameras, and a mobile studio that will provide HD quality video from any campus.
P E A C E
Although we’ve reached an incredible PEACE goal this year, there are still people in need of the Good News. We are going to the last unreached people groups in the world. There are 3600 people groups without a single church. Saddleback hopes to give them one.
BUILD 4 NEW PLACES
Another Worship Center
This new 1,000 seat venue will be utilized throughout the week as well as on the weekend. It will be located centrally on our Lake Forest campus, allowing for better parking access and shorter distances to our children’s and student areas.
A PEACE Center
To make it even more convenient to reach out to those in need, we’re going to house all of our compassion services at one location at the Lake Forest Campus: the food bank, free clinic, car repair, counseling, thrift store, and bookstore.
A Training Center
We’re going to train members, church planters, worship leaders, and second career staff to be a part of church planting teams through a new academy at Rancho Capistrano.
Worship Centers For Our Campuses
As we seek to enlarge our church family by opening new Saddleback campuses; we want them to have a place of worship. Decade of Destiny offering given at each regional campus will go to building fund accounts for each particular campus.
Orphan Sponsorship/Empty Orphanages
Children need families not orphanages. The Rwanda PEACE Plan churches are working with the government to empty orphanages by 2014. By reuniting children with parents in the community or by raising up and training adoptive families in Rwanda, children receive a loving, life-long, legal family of their own.
The Orphans and Vulnerable Children Initiative
The Orphan Care Initiative is the general fund which provides tools, training and resources to local churches so that every orphan and vulnerable child can have hope, healing and a future.. The primary emphasis is on helping churches launch Biblically sound orphan care ministries all around the globe. When you give to this fund you are:
- Helping local churches everywhere learn how to best solve the orphan care crisis in their own community through advocacy and reunification or adoption.
- Rescuing orphans and vulnerable children from the street, orphanages and other adverse circumstances by empowering the local church to care.
- Empowering churches with tools, training and models which emphasize both indigenous and intercountry adoption utilizing principle which help not hurt.
- Building Orphan Care ministries in the Saddleback Churches in the 12 cities around the world.
HIV/AIDS
Empowers churches to care for those who are infected and affected with HIV/AIDS. This includes powerful tools and simple training that focuses on prevention, treatment, care and support.
PEACE Relief
This fund prepares and enables people at Saddleback to bring comfort and hope to people in crisis following local and global disasters and then quickly provide training and opportunities to assist them back to a productive and more normal existence. We seek to comfort the hurting, give hope to the hopeless and to effectively move the survivors from relief to development with care and compassion.
Saddleback PEACE Fund
This fund supports the strategic and powerful launch of PEACE efforts around the world, which are equipping local churches to address the biggest problems in their communities.
End Land Grabbing
End Land Grabbing From Widows and Children
Each year thousands of widows and their children are left homeless and destitute in Rwanda and other countries in Africa. When the man of the house dies, just when his wife and children are grieving, his relatives force them from their home, sometimes with violence, and claim the house, the land, crops, livestock, everything of value.
Attorneys from the Justice & Trafficking Initiative have trained over 200 pastors in Rwanda on how to prevent such injustice. This fund supports the training of pastors throughout Rwanda and beyond, to end this evil practice.
The Persecuted Church
Help stop the persecution of millions of Christians around the world. This fund provides support for issues such as:
- The genocide in Orissa, India - helping pastors and church members to reconstruct churches and homes that were burned down during the genocide of 2008
- Somali Christian refugees in Kenya ñ relocating refugees into camps on the Sudanese/Kenya border
- The Every Country Strategy - sending teams that are going to countries with religious persecution in 2010
Food for the Poor & Hungry
This fund purchases and distributes food through our Food Pantry to help the poor, those hardest hit by the current recession.
The Saddleback Church Food Pantry has been able to help thousands of families since it opened just over a year ago. The number of families to which Saddleback is providing food is growing as other food banks in the area have had to turn away families for lack of food supply. Join us in serving our community as many are facing very difficult financial circumstances.
Clean Water
Almost a billion people lack access to safe water. Contaminated water accounts for 80% of diseases in developing countries and millions of deaths each year. Children are especially hit hard by the effects of dirty water and most of the deaths occur in children under age 5. The Clean Water Initiative empowers churches with clean water solutions and equips church leaders to help their local communities understand and value good hygiene.
Training Pastors & Christian Leaders Worldwide
This fund supports the training of pastors and Christian leaders worldwide in the fundamentals of leading a healthy church. They are taught about the Purpose Driven paradigm and the PEACE Plan as envisioned by Pastor Rick and his team. Currently there are over 10,000 pastors in this program and many, many more are waiting to be involved.
Rwanda Healthcare
In the country of Rwanda PEACE is working to empower Churches to identify developmental needs themselves and build plans to improve the health of their communities. This effort is also providing church health training for thousands of pastors across Rwanda. "This unparalleled program represents an innovative approach to decentralizing healthcare and increasing its access for the poor by using local churches in an unprecedented partnership with the Rwandan government's Ministry of Health." Pastor Rick.
Military Purpose Driven Life
Military personnel serving in every corner of the globe are finding hope and purpose through The Purpose Driven Life. Hundreds of thousands of men and women in uniform have discovered their Creator’s purpose for their lives. With your help, we’d like to see every service person receive a copy of the book. For every $20 you donate 20 service people will have the opportunity to discover God’s purpose for them.
Prison Purpose Driven Life
Thousands of prisoners have been set free from a prison of emptiness. With your help we would like to see every prisoner in America find the same hope-sustaining sense of purpose. For every $20 you donate 20 prisoners can get a special copy of The Purpose Driven Life and have the opportunity to discover God’s purpose for their lives.
Our goal is to plant Saddleback Churches in 12 strategic cities around the globe to reach the people who don’t know Christ in those communities, who with the help of
other churches can reach the remaining 3,800 people groups to hear and experience the love of Jesus Christ. God wants those from EVERY nation, tribe, people and
language in His family in heaven. This is an opportunity to invest your life to show Christ’s love.
I want to invest in:
