I was watching Disconvery Channel’s Nature’s Most Amazing Events and they were discussing polar bears during the months leading up to summer in the Arctic North. During this period of time polar bears gorge themselves on seals. The reason they do this to prepare for the coming months of hardship. You see during the summer months up there the ice melts and they cannot hunt seals as efficiently and may go ungry for a long time. So they use the good times to prepare for the bad times.

As I watched this the Holy Spirit revealed something to me, I say that because I doubt I would come up with something this brilliant. We need to be like the polar bears when it comes to our spirituality. Most of us in Christianity usually do the opposite. We neglect God during the good times and cry out to him during the bad. When everything is all hunky-dory we tend to forget about our need for God. But give it sometime and a crisis will hit and we will cry out. But as I watched the show I realized we need to do the opposite. We need to use the good times to prepare us for the bad times. We need to build up our relationship with God during the good times so we can rely upon it during the bad. So it is not that we use the good to prepare for the lack in the bad but we use the good to prepare us for the bad. During the good times we have an amazing opportunity to build our relationship with God up instead of only working on our relationship with him during the bad. It is the good times spent with God that will sustain us during the bad times of life. Which will you choose? Fostering your spirituality during the good or only during the bad?
